SER Certification Workshops aim to build a clear, practical understanding of the SER Certification Scheme in Scotland by introducing the legislative context, explaining the certification process, and highlighting the steps required to produce accurate, compliant certificates.

All workshops are delivered by experienced members of the Scottish Registration Board and combine presentations with practical exercises.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to: 

  • Explain the legislative background that governs the SER Scheme in Scotland.
  • Plan and scope certification effectively, including for staged warrants.
  • Prepare and produce SER certificates in line with Scheme requirements.
  • Apply procedures for amendments to warrants.
  • Understand and complete a Form Q (which is used to sign off finalised specialist design elements), including interim and multi-plot versions.
  • Interpret and implement SER Certification Performance Standards.
  • Prepare for and respond to audit procedures.

  • Engineers new to the SER Scheme who want a clear introduction to certification requirements. 
  • Existing Approved Certifiers wishing to refresh or update their knowledge. 
  • Engineers and technicians working within design teams who support the certification process. 
  • Practice managers and others responsible for compliance, quality assurance or oversight of certified work. 

About SER

Structural Engineers Registration Ltd (SER) provides and manages registration schemes for the certification of the design of building structures. In Scotland, SER operates the certification scheme that allows Approved Certifiers and Approved Bodies to confirm compliance of building structure designs with the relevant standards, streamlining the building warrant process. 

Speakers

Mark Lawler: Chair of SER’s Scottish Registration Board. Mark is a Chartered Structural Engineer with 40 years experience, and was previously a Partner with Harley Haddow, now a Consultant. Mark has been involved with the Scottish Registration Board and SER’s Audit Pool since 2006.

Robert Storey: Became joint Vice Chair of the Scottish Registration Board in May 2022. Robert is a Fellow of the Institution with 40 years’ experience in the design and supervision of building projects.
